Jeremiah 29:11
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for peace and not for evil, to give you a future and hope.
What is depression? It is a medical condition where a person gets into mood swings, feels dejected, loses hope, and is not easily motivated. The cause of depression, though not fully understood, can be triggered by several factors. Some common triggers are alcohol and drugs, family- if someone had depression, sudden loss of either a job or death of a close one, certain medications, etc. Sometimes, depression leads to suicidal thinking and needs to be closely watched. There are several medications called anti-depressants that a doctor may prescribe. Most often depressions are temporary but can last a long time in some patients. About 6-7 percent of American adults are diagnosed with depression. The current pandemic may have caused more people to have depression. Like any other condition, one needs to be aware of being in depression which would help in getting out of it.
As we had discussed in an earlier post on realities and unrealities, any disease or medical condition is an abnormality and since Divine Mind creates only normal healthy human beings. Any abnormality is an unreality manifested by a belief in something else other than God. One of the difficulties in convincing people of Brahman or God is He cannot be seen. One of the Upanishads, “Isoupanishad” calls this Power God, Brahman, which cannot be seen but creates everything in this world that can be seen as” That”. “That” which cannot be seen creates everything that can be seen and felt by normal senses, such as touch, see, smell, etc as a “Phenomenon”. Another Upanishad, “Mundokaupanishad” terms the entire life as a dream, an unreality, and the normal dreams we experience as a dream within a dream. I am mentioning these to point to the fact that depression is like a dream and it will be possible to wake up from that dream by understanding the truth of one reality, that God, Divine Mind is all in all, and by synchronizing the human mind, which causes all these abnormalities, with the Divine Mind by affirmations and prayer. In other words by spiritual thinking. By constant practice, one can be free of all these abnormalities of disease, poverty, allergies, lack of sleep, etc., etc. Initially, people who have depression need to be helped by another person and the mind needs to fill with the truth about God, Divine Mind so that they will realize that Divine Mind’s help is right at hand and is available 24/7. This is the reason, spiritual thinking is the ultimate help in overcoming depression.
